FYEFirst Year Experience - fall 2017

The First Year Experience learning community program is full for fall 2017.

You can apply to be on the waitlist by completing the  First Year Experience application . We will let you know if a space becomes available.

All new students are invited to attend Welcome Day on August 11 or 12. (see information below)


FYE at DVC is designed to help students:

  • gain awareness of campus resources and support services,
  • feel more connected, comfortable and at home in their college community,
  • acquire academic and life skills to succeed in college, and
  • reach their educational goals of earning a certificate or degree, and/or transferringto a university.

Program elements include:

Welcome Day

An event that allows all first year students to explore their campus community, attend informational workshops, and connect with their instructors, counselors, staff, and peers. This event is offered at the San Ramon campus on Friday, August 11 and the Pleasant Hill campus on Saturday, August 12. For more information and to register, visit Welcome Day .

Student Success Workshops

Offered throughout the semester and available to all students, these workshops help students develop the emotional and academic skills they need to succeed in college. All workshops are free and no registration is required. FYE students will be required to attend some student success workshops. View the current workshop schedules .

FYE Learning Community

Students enroll in English 118 linked with a transferable general education course and a “New Student Success Strategies class” designed to introduce students to valuable campus resources and college success skills. Together, these courses provide students with valuable instruction, information, and guidance during their first semester at DVC with support from their peers and instructors in a collaborative and reflective environment.


FYE learning community offered for fall 2017

  • At the Pleasant Hill Campus: English 118, Psychology 122 (Psychology in Modern Life), and Counseling 100 (New Student Success Strategies);

These learning communities will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays.

To be eligible for an FYE learning community, students must be:

  • new to college;
  • available for classes MW;
  • eligible for English 118 (through placement or DVC English assessment test).
